    1. Yes, ball thingies is the latin!
      They are commonly known as osage oranges, horse apples, hedge apples or, my personal favorite, bois d’arc.

  2. I was just about to ask if those were hedge apples but saw you answered that in the comments. My mom used to make me gather them to put in the corners of our farm house. Supposedly they kept (in a pie tin with cloves and something else) spiders and ants out of the house.
